"Perestroika in Paris" by Jane Smiley. Discussion moderated by Library Assistant, Jennifer McClear.
Paras, a spirited racehorse at a racetrack near Paris, finds the door of her stall open and wanders all the way to the city. She's dazzled by the sights, sounds, and smells around her, and isn't afraid. Soon she meets Frida, a German shorthaired pointer, who knows how to get by without attracting attention. Paras and Frida coexist in the city's green spaces, nourished by Frida's trips to the vegetable market. And make friends with two ducks and a raven. Then Paras meets a boy named Etienne, and gets to see the ivy-walled house where the boy and his nearly-hundred-year-old great-grandmother live. As the cold weather and Christmas near, friendships bloom. But how long can a boy keep a runaway horse hidden and all to himself in Paris? An adventure that celebrates curiosity, ingenuity, and desire of all creatures for true love and freedom.
