Two organizations merged to form the Coast Guard: the US Revenue Cutter Service and the US Life-Saving Service. The Revenue Cutter Service is the oldest federal sea service as it predates the US Navy with its founding in 1790. The US Life-Saving Service built its first stations in New Jersey and many of its structures are still standing, the oldest of which is in Monmouth County.
