Freedom Denied: NJ’s Enslaved People and The American Revolution explores the agency and determination of enslaved people in colonial New Jersey.

"Freedom Denied: NJ’s Enslaved People and The American Revolution" explores the agency and determination of enslaved people in colonial New Jersey. Their actions and perspectives mirrored the colonists’ call for liberty and freedom. The program examines these shared ideals and the counter-factors which denied enslaved people their freedom at the conclusion of The American Revolutionary War.

Biography: 

Davie-Lyn Jones-Evans is an elementary school teacher and a local historian. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in History and American Studies from Douglass College, Rutgers University, and a Master of Arts in Elementary Education from Seton Hall University. Jones-Evans’s At Home with History blog received the 2024 Somerset County Historic Preservation and History Publication Award for its preservation of African American history in Somerville, NJ. She is currently a community workshop co-presenter of What Happened to Lucy’s Son? A Guide to Doing Archival Research, serves on the Ubuntu Cultural Pavilion, Inc. Board and the New Cemetery Board.
