On December 16, 2024, President Biden signed a proclamation establishing the Frances Perkins National Monument in Newcastle, Maine, to honor the historic contributions of America’s first woman Cabinet Secretary and the longest-serving Secretary of Labor.
A champion of workers' rights and safety throughout her life, Frances Perkins served as the Secretary of Labor under Franklin Delano Roosevelt for the entirety of his presidency from 1933 to 1945. She established countless programs for the American people, including Social Security and unemployment insurance.
The Frances Perkins Center strives to honor this unsung hero's work by telling her story and advocating for the role of government in securing social justice and economic security for all.
