Listen to Iraqi poet, Faleeha Hassan, share her experiences as a UN refugee from Turkey and her early experiences as a Muslim woman in America.
Faleeha Hassan is an author and poet born in Najaf, Iraq, in 1967, who currently lives in the United States. She earned an MA in Arabic literature and has published several collections of poetry in Arabic: Being a Girl, A Visit to the Museum of Shade, Five Titles for My Friend—The Sea, Though Later On, Poems to Mother, Gardenia Perfume, and a collection of children’s poetry, The Guardian of Dreams. Hassan immigrated to the US with her children in 2012 after first having fled Iraq for Turkey when her books of poetry landed her on multiple ‘death lists’ published by radicals. She will share her experiences as a Muslim woman and poet in her native country of Iraq and her recently adopted home of the United States. A poetry reading, question and answer period and a book signing will follow her program.
