Much of the 19th century was known as the Victorian period, named during the 64-year reign of England's Queen Victoria. Her influence was evidenced in American death and mourning practices.
Explore preparation of the deceased's home and body, the wake, funeral service, internment, park cemeteries, grave stone symbolism, post-mortem photography, and spiritualism. Even after the loved one had passed, etiquette determined periods of mourning that could last for years. What seems strange and morbid today was part of the Victorian lifestyle.
