Professor Nicole Yanoso shares how Irish Americans as well as the Irish in Ireland have had a consistent, noteworthy impact on presidential careers and elections throughout American history.
The Irish and the American Presidency presentation will showcase the Irish as a potent force in American presidential politics. It seeks to challenge the widely-held notion that, excepting the famous elections of 1928 and 1960, the Irish primarily influenced state and local elections and administrations in American history. Instead, Irish Americans as well as the Irish in Ireland have had a consistent, noteworthy impact on presidential careers, policies, and elections throughout American history, from George Washington to modern times. Utilizing U.S. party systems as an organizational framework, the presentation will examine the various ways that Scots-Irish and Catholic Irish Americans, as well as the Irish who remained in Eire, have shaped, altered, and sometimes driven such presidential political factors as party nominations, campaign strategies, elections, and White House policy-making throughout American history.
Nicole Anderson Yanoso is an Assistant Professor of History and the Director of Political Science and American Studies at the College of Saint Elizabeth in Morristown, NJ. She received her BA from the College of St. Elizabeth, her MA from East Stroudsburg University, and her PhD from Drew University. Nicole is also the author of the 2016 book, "The Irish and the American Presidency."
