An Introduction to Honey Bees and Beekeeping

Experienced local beekeepers Adele and Lucy, members of the Raritan Valley Beekeepers Association, will present an introduction to backyard beekeeping, including the New Jersey Beekeeping Regulations.

Though not native to the Americas, the Western Honey Bee (Apis Melifera) has, since its introduction by Colonial settlers, played a vital part in our country’s agriculture. The honey bee is key in the pollination of fruits, vegetables and other flowering plants. Pollination services are provided by commercial beekeepers who bring their bees to large-scale growers.

Throughout history, honey bees have been a part of the home garden, with a hive or two providing pollination and producing honey. The popularity of backyard beekeeping grew significantly with the recognition of Colony Collapse Disorder in 2007 and has continued to rise in popularity.

Experienced local beekeepers Adele and Lucy, members of the team that developed the Beginner Beekeeping Course for the Raritan Valley Beekeepers Association, will present an introduction to backyard beekeeping, including the New Jersey Beekeeping Regulations.
