Learn to make a lialka motanka-a traditional Ukrainian wrapped or reeled doll. No sewing needed to make this special toy that was both a symbol of wisdom and a protectress for the family.
In English, lialka motanka means “wrapped/reeled doll” (lialka=doll / motaty=to wrap or reel). This ancient Ukrainian doll was traditionally made by women and girls. It is made by wrapping together leftover scraps of fabrics and was never sewn or pierced. They could be decorated as simply or ornately as desired. The doll was not only a toy, but also a symbol of wisdom, a protectress of the family, a symbol of Mother Earth. Dolls were usually passed on from one generation to another, and so also symbolized a connection between generations. During this 2 hour workshop, participants will make their own lialka motanka.
