William Barry Thomson, co-author of New Jersey Country Houses: The Somerset Hills, presents an illustrated lecture regarding noted New York architect and Somerset County resident George Browne Post .
George Browne Post (1837-1913) was a long-time resident of Bernardsville and among the first of the many affluent and prominent New Yorkers and Newarkers who, beginning in the 1870s, came to establish large country estates that came to be called the "Mountain Colony" of the "Somerset Hills". He and his sons designed nearly three dozen residences in Bernardsville alone (most of which are extant), as well as a number of other structures (including churches, banks, a hospital, and educational buildings) in Somerset and neighboring counties.
He is today perhaps best known for his design of the New York Stock Exchange. Post is also significant in architectural history because of the ways he advanced the technology and the art of the skyscraper. He was referred by his peers as, "the father of the tall building in New York" and "the dean of American architects."
