They have served as inspiration for art and literature; and they have kept an unflinching record of our past. Cemeteries were the country's first parks and natural conservation areas. They inspired the creation of Disneyland and suburban subdivisions. They stood as the first expressions of free religion and gave life to the modern death industrial complex. This lively program will unearth the hidden stories of America's burial grounds, what they say about us now and their threatened existence in the face of digital immortality.

Presenter: Greg Melville is an author, adventure journalist, and tombstone tourist whose works have appeared in many of the country's top print publications including "Outside", "Men's Health", "National Geographic Traveler", and "The New York Times". He is also a U.S. Navy veteran. Melville's book "Over My Dead Body" was hailed by the "New York Times" as "astonishing" and "powerful," It said, "This clever, sensitive book gives us a new way to think about death, not as the final chapter, but as a window onto life in America.”  Melville has served as an editor at "Men's Journal", "Sports Afield", and "Footwear News" and as a crime reporter for a daily newspaper in Northern Virginia. An officer in the Navy Reserve, he taught for five years at the U.S. Naval Academy, where he was the recipient of the school's Apgar Award for Teaching Excellence in 2019. He lives with his family in Delaware.
