Though the Stonewall uprising didn’t start the gay rights movement, it was a galvanizing force for LGBTQ political activism, leading to numerous gay rights organizations, including the Gay Liberation Front, Human Rights Campaign, GLAAD, and PFLAG. Today, the Respect for Marriage Act, positive portrayals of LGBTQ characters in movies and television, and countless Pride events are just some of the many benefits that might not have been possible if a group of gay men hadn’t stood their ground on a hot summer’s night in Greenwich Village. This program explores the lead-up and the after-effect of this pivotal LGBTQ event.
