Colin Powell (April 5,1937 - October 18, 2021) was an American politician, statesman, diplomat, and United States Army officer who served as the United States secretary of state from 2001 to 2005.

Drawing upon the recently published biography, "Colin Powell: Imperfect Patriot," Dr. Jeffrey Matthews’ lecture will assess General Powell’s long career in government service, three decades in the military and four years as secretary of state under George W. Bush.
Dr. Matthews is the George F. Jewett Distinguished Professor of Leadership at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. He has published three other books: "Alanson B. Houghton: Ambassador of the New Era," "Black sheep Leadership," and "The Art of Command." He is now finishing a new book, "Bad Generals, Bad Admirals: Unethical and Criminal Leadership in the U.S. Military."
