Sin, guilt, evil, temptation, and lust lurk about in the eerie settings of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel, "The Scarlet Letter", and in the short stories.

These traits can be found in Hawthorne's short stories “The Birth-Mark,” “Rappaccini’s Daughter,” and “Young Goodman Brown.” Punishment is ruthless for his characters, and freedom from these vices seems far off. Is mercy ultimately granted to them? Is Hawthorne’s sense of justice fitting for their sins? Or are there darker demons lurking throughout these texts?
In this program, we will explore these questions and get to know on a deeper level the famed Hester Prynne, her Pearl, Mr. Chillingworth, Dimmesdale the minister, and others in Hawthorne’s novel and short stories. They will slowly reveal to us the layers of evil that can be threaded throughout a society.
Presented by Professor Jamie Parmese from Raritan Valley Community College.
