We live in a world that is dominated by microbes. Dr. Jeff Boyd will introduce the recently inducted New Jersey State Microbe, Streptomyces griseus, which produces the antibiotic streptomycin.

Because streptomycin was isolated from a microbe discovered on New Jersey soil, and because of its activity against tuberculosis and Gram negative organisms, and in recognition of both the microbe and the antibiotic in the history of New Jersey, the state legislature voted unanimously to approve a bill that would name Streptomyces griseus as the official state microbe on March 23, 2019.
Dr. Boyd will discuss the incalculable impacts that it and other microbes have on our everyday lives.
