At daybreak, sentries at the Van Horne House heard the distant thunder of drums and cannon fire. Startled awake, American General Lincoln leapt from a window and mounted his horse, riding off before he was even fully dressed. British and Hessian troops soon overwhelmed the American forces, though some rebels managed to slip away into the surrounding hills.
