Avid bird watchers and Watchung residents, Denise Soppas and Charlie Neiss will lead an introduction to birding at Best Lake. All ages are welcome, but minors must be accompanied by an adult.
This activity will be held twice in early May, at the beginning of the spring migration season. This is the time of year when birds are most active and vocal. In addition, at this time of year the trees are just beginning to leaf in, so the birds are easier to spot. During the walk we will be visiting the Environmental Commission's riparian habitat restoration project at the east end of the lake. This restoration project has improved and increased habitat available for both migratory and nesting birds.
While this is geared towards beginning birders, all birders are welcome.
Sturdy shoes are recommended and while the library has seven pairs of binoculars that may be shared by the group, registrants are encouraged to bring their own binoculars if available. Registrants will meet in the Watchung Library at 20 Stirling Rd. parking lot and walk down to Best Lake together. This program is intended to be accessible and will be held on the paved paths around Best Lake. People who use a wheelchair or for other reasons wish to avoid stairs, may meet at the front of the library and then proceed by car to the Best Lake parking lot, or may elect to meet at the lot rather than at the library.
