Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate is a dual-timeline novel that follows the lives of two women. In 1939 Memphis, 12-year-old Rill Foss and her siblings are torn from their riverboat home and placed in the Tennessee Children’s Home Society orphanage, where they face cruelty and uncertainty. In present-day South Carolina, Avery Stafford, born into privilege, uncovers uncomfortable truths about her family's past. Inspired by a real-life scandal involving kidnapped children, this moving story explores resilience, family, and the enduring quest for belonging.
