In a state where undisturbed habitat for our at-risk wildlife is hard to find, a new island that recently formed off of New Jersey's coast provides a haven for nesting and migratory shorebirds. Todd will share the story of the formation of the island, how various bird species have used this new site, and what is being done to protect the species when they are there. He will also touch on the status of beach nesting birds in the state and region.
Presenter: Todd Pover is a senior wildlife biologist at the Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey. He has been working with our state's endangered beach nesting birds, such as piping plovers, least terns, black skimmers, and American oystercatchers, for over 30 years. Most of his conservation efforts and research has focused on their nesting season here in New Jersey, although he has also worked with partners all along the flyway, including extensive work on the piping plover wintering grounds in the Bahamas. He is a graduate of Rutgers University.
