This program is presented by Cindy Mitzen of the New Jersey Lighthouse Society
This program begins with the history of lighthouses, then moves to the characteristics of lighthouses.Who knows what a Fresnel lens is?
We will learn about the advancement of lighthouses and the reasons we still need them.
The presenter will delve into New Jersey's land based lighthouses (Sandy Hook, Navesink, Sea Grit, Barnegat, Tucker’s Island, Absecon, Hereford, Cape May, East Point, Tinicum and Finns Point Rear Range Lights) and several off shore lighthouses.
Cindy will also discuss the current lighthouse situation and will bring brochures for the October New Jersey Lighthouse Challenge.
The New Jersey Lighthouse Society (NJLHS) was formed in 1989 as a state chapter of the United States Lighthouse Society. In 1994, the chapter became the New Jersey Lighthouse Society, one of the largest regional lighthouse societies in the United States. The society counts among its membership more than 1000 people throughout the United States and the world.
The Society is dedicated to fostering an appreciation of the history about and to support the preservation of lighthouses everywhere. The main focus of the NJLHS in these efforts is on the New Jersey, Delaware Bay and New York Harbor regions.
