Panelists Christine A. Lutz, Tara Maharjan, and Stephanie Crawford will discuss their research on the New Brunswick Music Scene Archive, the New Jersey Regional Zine Collection, and the New Jersey Beer Collection. An emphasis on how faculty and staff have developed these collections by working with participants and creators outside mainstream popular culture leads to examples of how faculty and staff have engaged in outreach, particularly among students.

Going against the archival grain: case studies of pop culture archives of a music scene, regional zines, and local beer
Rutgers University Libraries' Special Collections and University Archives collects and preserves the history of the university and the state of New Jersey. Over the last few years, curators have focused on collecting contemporary popular culture materials, specifically around the legendary New Brunswick music scene, the ever-expanding craft beer industry, and zines reflecting diverse voices from around the state and region. In this talk, curators will share examples from these collections, discuss the importance of these materials, and explain how they are being preserved for future generations.
